KB100005 - Creating a Blank Asset, EPLog, or EPArchive Database

Problem

How do you create databases for use with EtaPRO APR, EPLog, or EPArchive?

Solution

IMPORTANT!  All EtaPRO 10.3 systems require an EPArchive database.  If you are upgrading a system that does not have one, you will need to either create one or download a blank database from the support site (https://support.etapro.com/) before you can start the EtaPRO server.
IMPORTANT!  If SQL Server is not installed on the same computer as EtaPRO, you will need to manually download blank databases from the EtaPRO support site and attach them to the SQL Server instance used by EtaPRO. Please see your corporate DBA for assistance doing this. EtaPRO will require database owner privileges on all of the databases it is using. Please contact EtaPRO Support at etaprosupport@gpstrategies.com or 716-799-1077 if you have questions.

Follow these steps to create a blank Asset, EPLog, or EPArchive database using the EtaPRO Service Manager.

  1. Open the EtaPRO Service Manager from the Start | EtaPRO 10 menu item on the EtaPRO server hardware.
  2. Click the Stop All Services button.
  3. When all the services have stopped, click the Configuration Settings button.

  1. The Configuration Settings dialog box displays.
  2. To create a database, enter the correct Database Server NameDatabase Security Mode (SQL Server or Windows), and a SQL Server Username and SQL Server Password if SQL Server Security Mode is selected in the appropriate fields.
  3.  Then click Refresh Databases.

  1. To crate an Asset database, click the Assets tab.

  1. Check the Enable Assets box.
  2. Click the Refresh Databases box.
  3. Select Create new database... from the Select an Asset Database drop-down box.

  1. The Create Asset Database dialog displays. Enter a Database Name and browse to the desired File Path, typically \\EtaPROConfig\Databases.

  1. Click Create. A message displays when database is successfully created. Click OK to complete the process.

  1. To create an EPLog database, click the EPLog tab and then click the Refresh Databases box.
  2. Select Create new database... from the Select an EPLog Database drop-down box.
  3. The Create Operations Log Database dialog displays. Enter a Database Name and browse to the desired File Path, typically \\EtaPROConfig\Databases.
  4. Click Create. A message displays when database is successfully created. Click OK to complete the process.
  5. To create an EPArchive database, click the EPArchive tab.
  6. EPArchive maintains some of its data outside of the SQL Server database. A storage directory path must be provided in addition to a SQL Server database. A new directory on the server’s data drive is recommended (e.g., D:\EtaPROFiles\EPArchive).

IMPORTANT!  If you are upgrading a system that was previously using EPArchive, do not modify the storage path or you will lose previously archived historical data.

  1.  Click the Refresh Databases box and then select Create new database... from the Select an Archive Database drop-down box.
  2. The Create Archive Database dialog displays. Enter a Database Name and browse to the desired File Path, typically \\EtaPROConfig\Databases.
  3. Click Create. A message displays when database is successfully created. Click OK to complete the process.
  4. Click OK to close the Configuration Settings dialog box.
  5. Click the Start All Services button.
  6. When all the EtaPRO services have started,  EtaPRO APR development can begin using the Asset Editor, EPLog can be configured, and EPArchive can be used to store historical data point values.
